Cinematic Literacy in Education

During the training year, ten (10) face-to-face or modern distance training sessions are held, in which the participants approach the methods and techniques by which the audiovisual products are produced and then use the audiovisual tools, become producers themselves, develop personal expression skills, organize and make simple audiovisual presentations (they photograph, they film, film, create animation, etc.). Then, they use the above experiences and skills to organize ten (10) workshops in the classroom, in which the teacher transfers his/her acquired experience by designing and implementing audiovisual literacy activities with his/her students.

The broader objective of the program: Cine graphs - Cinematic Literacy in Education is to achieve steps towards audiovisual literacy, i.e. the acquisition of skills (teachers and students), not only of viewing / consumption (use) but also of critical evaluation of audiovisual products (with the possible creation of visual concepts and the production of visual messages). The participants, after getting to know the methods and techniques by which films are produced as cultural products (study and critical approach of "ready-made" audiovisual products), then: (a) They use the audiovisual tools, develop personal expression skills, organize and make simple audiovisual presentations (photograph, film, film, create animation, etc.). Then, (b) they use the above experiences and skills to organize audiovisual expression workshops for children (inside and outside the classroom). Upon completion of the training program, the trainee is capable of:

  • To recognise the methods and techniques by which audiovisual products are produced as cultural products (study and critical approach to audiovisual creations),
  • To use audiovisual tools, to develop personal expression skills, to organize and make simple audiovisual presentations.
  • To use audiovisual products, as primarily multimodal products, with the implementation of interdisciplinary approaches/meetings with scientific fields, such as photography, visual image, music, movement, literature.
  • To organize workshops of audiovisual expression for children (inside and outside the classroom), with the aim of their students to take steps towards audiovisual literacy (acquisition of skills, not only of viewing / consumption (use) but also of critical evaluation of audiovisual products with the possible creation of visual concepts and the production of visual messages).

The duration of the program is nine (9) months and the training hours 400. The content is divided into ten (10) face-to-face or synchronous remote meetings or with the application of a mixed model of training meetings. Duration of training session four (4) training hours.

MODULE: Viewing

Session 1: Audiovisual and Cinematographic literacy

Audiovisual and Cinematic literacy: Delimitation and expressions of terms at the level of teaching practice.

  • The child viewer, the child a critic, the child a creator.
  • The film event as a construction. Is the picture the reality?
  • The ideology and decisions of the creator
  • Censorship in watching movies with children
  • Media and copyright security issues.
  • Activities for children.

Session 2: The enjoyment of viewing - Cinema club for children.

  • Viewing- empirical approach to films. The types of viewers or the uniqueness of the viewer?
  • The psychological mechanisms of viewing.
  • Film club for children (creation-operation).
  • The steps of approach to the narrative film. Movie approach tabs.
  • Activities for children

Session 3: Designing film activities for children-Documentaries and Animation

  • The identity of the documentary - The context of creation
  • The communicative nature of the documentary - The context of the reception
  • The creator's intentions
  • The steps to approach the documentary.
  • Activities for children
  • Acquaintance and familiarity with the semantic, ideological, psychological, aesthetic tricks-codes of animation.
  • Critical approach to the technical and cultural characteristics of ready-made audiovisual products-animation
  • The steps to approach animation
  • Activities for children

 

UNITY: Critical approach – Initiation into cinematic codes

Session 4: Photo workshop for children

  • Photographic and cinematic literacy
  • The composition of the photographic image
  • Activities for children

Session 5: Initiation into technical codes

  • Frame, shot, scene
  • Camera position, camera movement, shooting angle, lighting, etc.
  • Activities for children

Session 6: Initiation into cultural codes

  • Sounds – music – silences
  • Silent cinema

MODULE: Creation

Session 7: Cinema and Creative Writing

  • The Script - Storyboard
  • Getting to know the protagonist - The protagonist's journey
  • How do we turn a literary story into a script?
  • Writing original scripts with children
  • Films as stimuli and models of technique for writing scripts or narratives
  • Activities for children

Session 8: Photo-stories

  • Do the photos tell stories?
  • Creating photo-history
  • Activities for children

Session 9: "Filming" at school.

  • Production of audiovisual products
  • Activities for children

Session 10: Connecting cinema with other forms of expression

  • Connection of cinema with other forms of expression (photography, visual image, music, movement, literature, creative writing).
  • Techniques of interdisciplinary activities.
  • Activities for children.

(a) The trainees participate, every twenty (20) days in asynchronous distance training sessions.

(b) After each session, being trained, he/she is asked to post an electronic deliverable work (upload), where he/she should formulate and attach his/her answer, the content of which stems from the implementation of the action in the school room (activity planning).

At the end of the training sessions and the implementation of the workshops, the trainee is invited to post thefinalpaper, which is evaluated by the trainer

Finally, educational material is provided in electronic form (e-book), in order to facilitate the trainees in cases where they prefer its printed version.

At the same time, full educational support is provided, since the trainee can address electronically (for the duration of each course) to his/her trainer, through an integrated electronic communication system, for the immediate resolution of questions related to the thematic units and the assessment exercises or the final paper.

Applications for participation can be submitted by:

  • Teachers of primary education (kindergarten teachers, teachers of classes and specialisations) and of secondary education.
  • Students and graduates of film schools and other schools of related subjects.
  • Students and graduates of Pedagogical Schools and schools with studies of social orientation.
  • Laboratory animators

Participation is considered successful and the Certificate of Participation is issued when the trainee:

(a) Participate in the distance training sessions. Maximum permissible absence of one (1) Session.

(b) Implement all the foreseen workshops in the classroom and submit-post the deliverables of each application by the next session.

(c) Prepare and post a final paper which will be positively evaluated by the trainer.

(d) Complete a programme evaluation questionnaire.

(A) With regard to the assessment of the acquired skills of students at the level of the implementation of the school class, the following will be used: 1. Implementation of an evaluation activity after the implementation of the monthly workshop (in total eight evaluative activities will be implemented). 2. Evaluation of students' deliverables (creative writing texts, constructions, etc.).

(B) As far as the evaluation of the Programme is concerned, the following will be used: 1. Questionnaire to teachers and 2. Interview with teachers (semi-structured interview). The Program will be evaluated: (a) as to the feasibility of implementation, (b) the degree of participation and expression of interest by students, teachers and parents and (c) the effectiveness of the implementation of film literacy activities in the Greek school.

The successful completion of the program leads to the issuance of a Certificate of Participation in the program "Cine Graphs - Cinematography in Education", certified by the institution: ACTA.

The scientific coordinator of the Program is Stavros Grosdos, scientific associate of the Chania Film Festival, who is responsible for the design and implementation of the educational process.

The trainers of the Program are academics, special scientists, film professionals, collaborators/ideas of the Chania Film Festival with experience in the implementation of film literacy programs.
