Workshop Description

The workshop is addressed to students and the general public who are interested in getting in touch with the subject of visual arts. Knowledge of drawing or previous visual knowledge is not necessary. The aim of the workshop is to get acquainted with alternative methods of artistic creation. The art of recent decades has familiarized the public with artistic production that goes beyond traditional techniques, painting, sculpture, engraving and photography. In the light of conceptual art, the art that puts forward the idea, new methods emerge that take advantage of random findings, new technologies or revise and renew established techniques. The aim of this workshop is to familiarize participants with the practices of appropriating objects and concepts, re-conceptualizing them in new contexts, often with a playful and ironic mood, practices that essentially activate artistic research. Through the examination of a variety of examples, an attempt will be made to investigate the methods used by the visual artist in order to choose his object/subject, to explore his artistic field and to present the results of this research to the public. The programme covers the following thematic areas:

  • Getting to know participants through collective drawing exercises (in game form)
  • Introduction to the concept of reuse. First approaches to waste as artistic material
  • Sculpture workshop from objects that have lost their usability e.g. pieces of packaging, plastic lids, old toys, old stationery etc.
  • Workshop of constructions from used materials. Attempt to render them in space

The workshop is implemented in collaboration between the Chania Film Festival and the InArts Interactive Arts Laboratory of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University. The Scientific Coordinator of the action is Angelos Floros, Assistant Professor of the Ionian University.
