Manga Lab Character Design: How We Design Face and Body the Way of ANIME

Workshop description

It is a workshop for creating an original design according to the technique of Japanese Manga comic book style and the application of this knowledge in animated anime films.

In the first part (about 45 minutes) there will be a screening on the creative design of an invented animation character and a demonstration of the basic techniques of Manga.

In the second part, the students, with the help of the instructors, will design their own Character inspired by favorite anime works.

The objectives of the action are: 1/ To inform young people about what are the steps of creating a Character Design in the production flow of an animation project, 2/ to be trained in creating their own Manga design and 3/ to gain knowledge and experience on the popular genre of Japanese comics and animation and what is the difference with other schools of animation design.

The workshop is implemented in collaboration between the Chania Film Festival and the inArts Interactive Arts Laboratory of the Department of Audio and Visual Arts of the Ionian University. The scientific coordinator of the action is Angelos Floros, Assistant Professor of the Ionian University.

Short bio

He was born in Athens. She is a graduate of the Department of Sociology of Panteion University and the School of Visual and Applied Arts of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. She also holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts from Northumbria University at Newcastle in the United Kingdom (with a scholarship from the Academy of Athens) on the Theatrical nature of visual arts/hybrid visual applications in theatrical practice.

He has held 3 solo exhibitions/installations and has participated in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.

She deals with graphic applications and scenography in the theater as well as with archaeological design as a member of the conservation team of Akrotiri Thira murals and as a museum painter in Ephorates of Antiquities.

She worked in Secondary Education while since 2019 she is in an EEP position at the Department of Audio and Visual of the Ionian University, participating in the teaching of drawing, video art and image animation, while her research interests focus on the study of Modernist architecture in the Ionian Sea.
